WHOA!!!

The first word one learns around horses and it was the word that echoed with guttural screams as I held on for my life to the mane of the horse. Thirty years ago, that terrifying incident was my introduction to trail riding. It was also the first time I’d been on a horse. My progression from ‘armchair cowgirl’ to riding cowgirl was to be commemorated by a not so graceful fall off the bolted horse which left me concussed, battered and bruised. Not wanting to be deterred, this cowgirl persisted and horses became the healing balm in my life. When it came to choosing a name for my outdoor adventure club, I could not think of anything better than WHOA – The perfect acronym.

The ‘WOMEN HOOKED ON OUTDOOR ADVENTURE’ sisterhood essentially brings women of all abilities and walks of life together to share adventures and camaraderie to gain new insights and experiences to empower, improve and define themselves.

Adventure in the outdoors offers the thrill of the unknown and unexpected that reels us into inspiring escapes and connects us with the innocence of a childhood we long to fully experience again – our wild child self.

Outdoors we become separated from our own species and come nearer to another – nature, and all her wild splendour. It is this connection and union with wilderness, natural beauty, human intimacy, physical strength and psychological challenges that offer us the excitement of adventure whilst allowing us to return home with a better understanding of who we really are because in nature is where we have the freedom to feel a kind of impersonal kinship and find joy in that kinship.

Exploring outdoor pursuits can often take us out of our comfort zones and is therefore one of the best ways to plunge into a primal world of survival. Adventure can help us learn to overcome obstacles and gain coping skills that can improve our mental and physical wellbeing and transform our lives. Sharing life-altering experiences forges strong ties, and envelops us with a feeling of belonging.

W.H.O.A. escapes are facilitated by professional, accredited and certified guides and instructors who are fully qualified to ensure the wellbeing and safety of participants. Participants do not need to have previous experience.
